Mind if we ask you a personal question?
Every year at this time we ask publishers the same question: how much money did you make from ads last year?
OK, we know you shouldn’t ask your friends how much they earn – but it’s important for us to collect the data, which is treated totally confidentially, and gets fed as a single total into the annual ASA advertising turnover report. This is a industry wide review of actual advertising spend by category (radio, TV, magazines, newspapers, out of home, cinema etc). The report goes public, and used as bit of an industry standard for what is happening in the market.
The graph from last year (below) It showed that $203 million was spent in magazines, including $30 mill in digital – represing 7. 7 per cent of the total (indicating we were pretty much holding our own from the previous year, where wihen mag revenue was $209 or 8.2 per cent of the total) Mags digital and direct ads had both increased as a percentage of our take
